Dong Kingman
Artist
Dong Kingman was born Dong Moy Shu (1911-2000) in Oakland, California. As a child, he knew that he wanted to be an artist and when his family returned to Hong Kong, he began to study art. He studied traditional Chinese brush painting and calligraphy as well as a new art that was coming out of Europe called Impressionism. Kingman returned to San Francisco as a young man during the depression and took any job just to survive. He captured all the nuances of San Francisco from the winding roads to the enormous hills to the bridges. Throughout his life, he never stopped painting and created his unique form of art during times of great political upheaval, social unrest and economic depression.
