Yoshiko Uchida

Yoshiko Uchida (1921-92) was born to Japanese immigrant parents in Alameda, California. She enrolled at a young age of sixteen in the University of California, Berkeley. Uchida’s family was interned at the Topaz War Relocation Center during World War II, and she was allowed to leave in 1943 when she was accepted to graduate school in Smith College in Massachusetts. Uchida received numerous awards for the over thirty books that she wrote for both children and adults.
