Walter U. Lum Place (Chinatown, San Francisco)

Walter Uriah Lum was a newspaper editor and a civil rights advocate. He recreated the Native Sons of the Golden State, later named Chinese American Citizens Alliance in 1936. He was elected the first Grand President and served for fourteen years. Walter was a staff member of Young China for thirty-five years and worked as an editor, translator and reporter. In 1913, he and his colleagues fought to stop a bill that sought to deprive Chinese Americans the right to vote. The Chinese Six Companies selected him to be camp manager, interpreter and coordinator for activities related to Chinese refugees. Walter fought for many Chinese American rights and helped the Chinese American community in unlimited ways.
