Ruth Asawa

Sculptor

Ruth Asawa (1926-2013) was a sculptor/artist born in Norwalk, California. She was interned with other Japanese Americans during World War II, but persevered and became known as San Francisco’s “Fountain Lady.” Her most representative works are the Mermaid Fountain in Ghiradelli Square and the San Francisco Fountain at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. In honor of her art and activism, a school was named the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts in 2010.
