Howard Bach was born in Vietnam (1979) and immigrated to San Francisco with his family in 1982. He attended Marina Middle School and Galileo High School. Before training for the Olympics at age 16, Bach played badminton for 11 years at the Tenderloin YMCA. In 2005, he became the first US badminton player to win gold at the World Championships. Bach played men's double in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. When he made it to the quarter-finals in 2008, he became the first US Olympian to go that far in the competition.
