Helen S. Chin Community Center in Gordon J. Lau Elementary School (950 Clay Street, San Francisco)

Helen S. Chin, born in San Francisco, was the principal of Gordon J. Lau Elementary School and a civil rights activist. She earned her BA and MA degrees from San Francisco State. Helen started her career in 1972 at the San Francisco Unified School District, where she had been a bilingual teacher, curriculum coordinator, and assistant principal. She became president of The Association of Chinese Teachers (TACT), and an officer and member of the Chinese for Affirmative Action. Helen was also an active volunteer at Self-Help for the Elderly and the On Lok Senior Center.
