Grace Lee Boggs
Activist & Writer
Grace Lee Boggs (1915-2015), the daughter of Chinese immigrants, was born in Providence, Rhode Island. She graduated with a PhD in Philosophy from Bryn Mawr College at age 25, but could not find a job because she was Asian. She moved to Chicago and was hired in a library for $10 a week, living in a rat-infested basement apartment. Boggs participated in the Civil Rights Movement, the March on Washington and many other movements that fought for marginalized groups such as women and people of color.
